Norrbotten är ett landskap i nordostligaste Sverige. Det gränsar i väster till Lappland, i öster till Finland och Bottenviken och i söder till Västerbotten. Landskapet Norrbotten utgör den östra delen av Norrbottens län.
Norrbotten tillkom som ett resultat av att Norrbottens län bröts ut ur Västerbottens län Länsklyvningen kungjordes den 21 maj Landskapen Lappland och Västerbotten kom därmed att delas mellan de båda länen. Med tiden började Norrbotten betraktas som ett eget landskap, men uppfattningen att det var en del av Västerbotten levde kvar parallellt åtminstone under första halvan av talet.
Statusen som självständigt landskap stärktes då Norrbotten som sista svenska landskap av statsheraldikern fick ett eget landskapsvapen efter beslut av länsstyrelsen i Norrbottens län.[2]
Som landskap är Norrbotten förhållandevis svagt etablerat. I vardagligt tal används ofta Norrbotten som beteckning på hela länet.
Norrbotten är det enda landskapet i Sverige som varken är ett grevskap eller hertigdöme.

Umeå, called Ume by locals, is a city near the mouth of the Ume River. It is the capital of Västerbotten County in northern Sweden, and with about , citizens it is the largest city in Norrland. Umeå is known for its university and many birch trees, giving it the nickname "Björkarnas stad", or the "Town of Silver Birches".

[edit]Being the regional capital of Västerbotten, Umeå is also the educational and economic capital city of the region, with no Swedish city of similar size further north. With its strategic location along the E4 national highway, most transportation to the northern part of Sweden goes through here. Umeå has the largest hospital in Northern Sweden as well as the largest university. Situated on top of a small hill overseeing the Ume river and downtown Umeå, they are by far the largest employers in the region. Due to the university, Umeå has one of the lowest average ages in the entire country with a lively night life and creative scene. Umeå was awarded the title "European Capital of Culture ".
History

Västerbotten County (Swedish: Västerbottens län) is a county or län in the north of Sweden. It shares the borders with the counties of Västernorrland, Jämtland, and Norrbotten, as well as the Norwegian county of Nordland and the Gulf of Bothnia. Its capital fryst vatten Umeå, and the largest town in the nordlig part fryst vatten Skellefteå. These two municipalities make up the majority of the population. Västerbotten County has vast wilderness areas, and a nation area larger than Denmark, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
